The Children’s Book Review
What to Expect: Friendship, change, resilience, family, ghosts, injustice.
This mature middle-grade novel is a layered, haunting tale that blends historical and contemporary perspectives to explore themes of displacement, resilience, and injustice.
Although they are separated by nearly 100 years of history, Amy and Penny are drawn together by what they share—life in a mysterious Victorian house and the ghost of a tragic nanny named Sally. In 2023, Amy struggles to adjust to her new life by a North Carolina lake, feeling isolated and out of place and desperately missing the friends and life she’s left behind. Similarly, Penny faces loss and danger in 1938 after the death of her parents, and struggles with cruel treatment as an isolated and unwanted poor relation forced to work as a nanny.
Their paths intertwine when the ghostly presence of Sally reveals hidden truths, secrets of the past, and a shared history of resilience. As they uncover Sally’s story, both girls find courage, friendship, and strength through their connection, showing that even the most unwelcome changes can bring silver linings.
Amy’s journey from resentment and loneliness to courage and connection mirrors Penny’s quiet determination to protect those in her care and to survive whatever life might throw her way, highlighting how courage can emerge even in the most unlikely circumstances. The story’s setting—a picturesque North Carolina lake and a creaky Victorian house—adds both charm and atmospheric eeriness, immersing readers in the mystery as they drink in the sights, smells, and sounds that connect the two girls. The dual timelines create a compelling tension. With its focus on friendship, courage, and uncovering hidden truths, this book is perfect for middle-grade readers who enjoy mysteries, historical fiction, or a touch of the supernatural.
The Secret of Spirit Lake is both suspenseful and heartfelt, offering a story whose wisdom lingers long after the final page.

About the Author
Jane Haltmaier always loved writing, but it wasn’t until after retiring from a thirty-year career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board that she finally had the time to pursue it fully. Inspired by her volunteer work at a residential village for abused children—where she led book clubs for teenage girls—Jane was moved to write a young adult novel of her own.
Drawing from living on a lake in Locust Grove, Virginia, her love of swimming, and memories of growing up in an old New England house, Jane weaves atmospheric settings with resilient, relatable characters. She believes the heart of a good story lies in protagonists who face challenges and rise to meet them.
Jane holds a Ph.D. in economics and has been married to her husband, John, for over forty years. She is the mother of three grown daughters and grandmother to one grandson. When she’s not writing, she enjoys making mosaics, playing the piano, swimming, volunteering, and spending time with her family.
