The Children’s Book Review

What to Expect: Friendship, space, acceptance, kindness, unity.
In this upbeat space-themed picture book, readers will meet two main characters who are determined, resourceful, and open-minded in their quest to unite humanity—both with itself and with the wider universe.
Nia and Zeke have some amazing news: they’ve met friendly intergalactic aliens who really want to invite humanity to be part of the super BIG galactic family! The only problem is that humans aren’t quite ready yet—they have a bad track record when it comes to getting along with one another. Now, it’s Nia and Zeke’s job to spread the word—humans need to join together and spread “unite energy” so the aliens can see they are ready to be part of the family. The solution? Well, nothing brings people together as well as a party, so Nia and Zeke are planning a big one!
The story encourages readers to think about their role as part of the wider human race and within the universe, and teaches important lessons about acceptance, working together, and positive action. The cartoon-style illustrations move from close-up shots to crowd scenes to zoomed-out frames that emphasize the vastness and diversity of the universe, emphasizing the message that we are part of something bigger. The text is simple and accessible, with bolded text highlighting key messages for readers to focus on.
Inspiring as well as stimulating, One Big Galactic Family is a great story for launching discussions about unity and humanity.
