What to Expect: Dogs, pets, bravery, safety, confidence, family.
In this lovable picture book, a boxer with a big personality and an even bigger fear of flies takes center stage in a story about practicing bravery and leaning in to the support of loved ones.
Hank the Boxer has a pretty wonderful life, except for one thing … he’s afraid of flies! When they zoom around the room or divebomb near his face, Hank can’t help it—he runs for cover or hides under his blanket. Hank hates being so cowardly, and he tries really hard to stand up to the fly—he even writes some rules for the flies to follow when they’re in his space—but it’s no good: the fly just doesn’t seem to care about following his rules.
Then, something game-changing happens: when the fly comes to bother him, his moms are there to help! They tell him he is brave, and loved, and just this once, Hank has the courage to stand up to that pesky fly!
Hank is loving, determined, and delightfully timid, with a big personality that makes it easy for readers of any age to see themselves reflected in him. His emotional honesty doesn’t just invite readers’ sympathy; it also teaches the important lesson that no matter how big you are, fears can creep in. Importantly, Hank’s interactions with his family also emphasize that being brave isn’t about not feeling fear—it’s about learning to feel safe even when fear strikes. The artwork depicts Hank (and his fly nemesis) with playfully human expressiveness, blending humor with just the right touch of heartfelt sincerity.
Full of canine bravado and affection, Hank the Brave is an excellent match for readers who prefer their stories to be both silly and uplifting.
