Brilliant Board Books – August 2025 (Part Two)

Lions Lay Eggs!

- Text by Becky Davies
- Illustrated by Gareth Lucas
Who doesn’t love a book that turns things on their head before putting them right way round again, making the content hilarious, and teaching children facts in a fun way that makes the information and recalling it more memorable as a result. That is how I would sum up Lions Lay Eggs!
Each left page of the two page spreads inside this book feature a pattern that looks pretty, and its use becomes apparent when you turn the page and utilise the cutouts to getting corrected on something animal related that the text has initially suggested completely incorrect information about. We tried guessing from the patterned pages as to what animals would feature next, but we were wrong every time – whilst being delighted by what we did see become apparent from combining the pattern with the cutout. There is a varied selection of baby animals included inside this book, and how they are born is the theme running through the book. The book concludes with a flap to interact with, which little ones will love, and true to the books LOL style the final animals included will make you do just that – Laugh Out Loud!
The illustrations are cute with a traditional vibe to them which in turn gives a comforting feel to the book overall, and the use of patterns within the illustrations gives a textured look to the animals too. The patterns that define an animal such as stripes on a zebra and that tortoiseshell design on giraffes becomes more apparent as a result of the cutout itself and the illustration design drawing your eye to it, which offers little ones the ability to learn recognisable details of different animal species’ from this book too. Pairing this clever book format with the creative illustrative content and tying it all together with short, quizzical, humour filled sentences ensures this is a book that will prove to be a huge hit with little ones.
Hank Goes Peck

- Written by Maudie Powell-Tuck
- Illustrated by Duncan Beedie
Continuing the LOL vibe in board books for little ones, here we have a book all about a very naughty goose called Hank, who loves to go around pecking everything and anything that catches his eye. The big problem with Hank doing this is how much it impacts the other animals around him and spoiling their fun as a result. It seems Hank just cannot help but peck!
His antics negatively impact the fun of a variety of other farm animals, and this is despite their pleas for him not to which fall on deaf ears, as does their warning to Hank to not upset the Bull. When Hank does just that, obstinate as ever, he gets his comeuppance! The conclusion is so funny, along with the entire book, and the cut-outs or pecked holes created by Hank as they are designed to be add even more fun to this book, drawing your eye across each and every page.
With the beautiful illustrations depicting farm animals and scenes that compliment the unfolding fun perfectly, this is an all round LOL fun book to enjoy with little ones.
Noisy Animal World : My First Animal Sound Book

Who doesn’t love a book about animals? They are always such a huge hit with all ages, and this particular title holds no less then 25 sounds of animals to enjoy via the touch sensors found throughout the book, and for sure makes it one awesome book to interact with – regardless of age!
With full colour photographic images of a whole host of animals – farm, domestic, big and small, and many more besides this is such a visually rich resource for little ones to learn so much from. My baby nephew was fascinated to sit with me and go through this book, and now crawls over to it so that we enjoy it over and over, and we really would love for there to be more titles like this in the future.
Farm : My First Touch and Explore

There is so much to engage with inside this Touch and Explore themed book, which has textured photographs throughout of a whole host of farm themed animals and content. There are also opportunities to trace cut-outs such as a spiral one that represents the shape of a pig tail.
The photographs afford little ones a whole host of animals to learn about, and the texturised pages give this book added appeal, especially to those that are sensory based learners. This also means little ones spend longer on each page, truly taking in everything inside. There are also flaps to interact with so that additional content can be revealed, and combining all of these elements into the one book make this an absolute gem of a book for little ones to enjoy, engage with, interact with, and learn from too.
