Beautiful and Intriguing Reimaging of Sleeping Beauty

This book is a reimagining of the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” that is set in Africa. Princess Rebecca gets a curse placed on her shortly after being born by an evil fairy. The curse states that if she hasn’t found true love by sixteen she is going to fall into an everlasting sleep. Will the king, queen, and three good fairies be able to break the curse?

What I liked: It’s exciting to see a multicultural take on a fairy tale that we all grew up with and see a different ending then the one we are all familiar with. It was fascinating to see how familial love and friendship was able to break the curse and how that also counts as true love. This goes to show that true love doesn’t always come from a romantic partner but can surround you in other forms.

The illustrations do a amazing job of bringing this reimagined story to life as they highlight the distinct differences between this story and the original. The illustrations also showcase the various clothing that is worn in Africa, which is where the story is set. The animals that are included in the illustrations are also unique to this story and add to the brilliant setting.

Final Verdict: Sleeping Beauty (Once Upon a World) is a beautiful board board that reimagines the story of “Sleeping Beauty” allowing young Black children to see themselves represented in a fairy tale. All children ages 2 and up will enjoy the vibrant illustrations throughout this story and love the characters introduced such as Rebecca and the good fairies.
