There’s an old, grouchy witch in town, Grizelda the Green, who hates Halloween. This year, she has had enough and has a plan to ensure that the holiday is done once and for all. There’s a ton of surprises in store for the trick or treaters as well as Grizelda the Green this Halloween.

What I Liked: This book introduces you to Grizelda in her home as she is plotting a way to end Halloween once and for all. She shares why she isn’t a big fan of Halloween, and you see how the various creatures in her house are scared because of the noisy trick-or-treaters. Spell after spell, Grizelda attempts to ruin the trick-or-treaters’ night so that they will go home, but each time they have a way of continuing. She has had enough and does what she deems is the worst trick of all, only to find the children joyous with her magic. Grizelda finds the joy in giving and finds a way for the night to be magical for all.

The vibrant illustrations throughout this book do a great job of keeping a young reader’s attention as magic is brought to life through Grizelda’s various antics. Each page brings different magical antics, such as ruining pumpkins, lights, and transforming treats, which are all fun ways for the children to enjoy the holiday.

Final Verdict: Grizelda the Green Hates Halloween is a fun and silly book that is told in rhyme, which is perfect for ringing in Halloween. Children ages 4 and up will enjoy seeing how Grizelda tries to ruin the holiday, but how the children embrace the new challenges that await them. They will also enjoy seeing how Grizelda is incorporated into the holiday with the trick-or-treaters to change her perspective on the holiday.
