What to Expect: Courage, curiosity, exploration, problem-solving, science, physics.

Physics and problem-solving play central roles in this story about curiosity and exploration.

Ever since he was a little boy of three, Teddy Lou has been fascinated by bells. He loves the musical sound they make and the way they always ring at the same time of day. Soon, his curiosity about bells grows, and Teddy begins to study them more closely, discovering other bells in his town and finding out all kinds of facts about the bells of the world.

But there is one thing Teddy really wants to find out that reading alone can’t tell him—what do bells smell like? To find out, Teddy climbs to the top of the Church tower, risking his hearing and his life, and putting everything he knows about physics to work to answer his question safely.

Teddy Lou is a smart, daring protagonist, and readers will recognize in him a reflection of their own pet passions and niche interests, as well as the drive to learn more about them. Along the way, they’ll also learn Newton’s three laws of motion and see them applied to real-life problem-solving through systematic scientific thinking, helping them build scientific knowledge and curiosity. Throughout the story, artwork in a limited palette of yellows, browns, and blues presents Teddy’s adventures from a range of perspectives, sometimes zooming in close and sometimes changing angle, creating a reading experience that feels dynamic and immersive. The rhyming text is funny and rhythmic, inviting shared and out-loud reading.

For curious readers who like to find answers for themselves, Teddy Lou, Bell Guru, is sure to be a fun and inspiring read.
