Letters from Wonderland

  • Based on the original text and illustrations by Lewis Carroll and Sir John Tenniel
  • Illustrated by Filippa Widlund

An interactive Alice Adventure, with letters to open and a game!

Ever since first coming across The Jolly Postman with my children, and falling in love as a family with the interaction it offers readers through the letters in the envelope format pages, we have gone on to purchase a fabulous array of this style of book, with Letters from Wonderland coming through the post from Macmillan being the latest brilliant addition to our collection – and we truly do cherish what each and every single one of them has to offer. From The Jolly Christmas Postman through a large quantity of Angelina Ballerina and then more recently a few standalone titles in this style, we have sort out and adored each and every one of them, so finding out that an absolute classic from the world of children’s literature in Alice in Wonderland has become an interactive letters/post style picture book is the combination that makes my heart so happy.

Key components of Lewis Carroll’s original text take readers of this book to the world of Alice, the Mad Hatter, and all of the magic and majesty that we know and love about the world of Wonderland. Filippa Widlund has done a stellar job illustrating this book and has done so in a way that truly does the original classic justice, whilst ensuring the latest generation is as awestruck as all those that have come to love A in W through the years. The attention to detail is incredible, with the design of the envelopes in this book being a particular favourite of mine. They are stunning, individually designed in a theme not just relevant to the sender but to the part of the book we find ourselves in, and they are exquisite to look at. The letters held within the envelopes transform your reading experience to immerse you right there with Alice, holding the letter in your hands as you progress the story through characters writing to one another, and it is such a clever way of introducing a new character into the story for readers, especially as this is a condensed version of the much larger chapter book original, so to avoid the feeling of jumping around to new places and people it affords smooth transitions as a result.

The playing around with font styles and sizes is another exciting detail throughout this book, maintaining your interest in the content whilst ensuring the reading experience is a fun one, and with the stunning illustrations adorning the pages you can tell the publishers put together the perfect author and illustrator duo to bring Alice in Wonderland to the latest generation of readers. I dont think I could pick out my favourite aspect of this book because its a gem from start to end, but what I have also truly come to appreciate is how inspiring this book is with respect to letter writing and sending/receiving post, and there will be so many little ones who take up this incredible skill as a result of interacting with this book. Just this past week I was looking over some memories in a box I have kept over the years and truly treasure and found letters my children have written, using cute child themed letter sets, and they delighted in doing that for myself and others in the family – something I can totally see so many children doing as a result of this inspiring book. It truly is the perfect book for those who love interacting with content, are fans of Alice in Wonderland or classic children’s books, and of course those who are familiar with this format of book too.

This would make for such a magical gift to inspire a love of reading, birthday present, or Christmas gift – I buy as early as possible for my loved ones and there is nothing like being inspired with a gift idea mid October for Christmas. I will definitely be buying several copies of this book to gift to some very special children in my life.

This book is available to purchase from all good booksellers now.
